On 30 October 2026, System 3 celebrated its 44th anniversary, marking more than four decades of creating and publishing games enjoyed by generations of players.

Founded on 30 October 1982, System 3 has remained independent under the ownership and leadership of founder Mark Cale. The company has never been sold or merged into another games company. We believe System 3 is the world’s longest-running independent games developer and publisher still owned and led by its original founder.

Our story spans the early days of home computers through to today’s consoles. Along the way, the International Karate (IK) series and The Last Ninja series, together with games such as Myth, Vendetta, Tusker, Putty, the James Pond series, the Constructor series and the Ferrari Challenge series, have become part of gaming history and, for many players, part of their childhood. The Last Ninja series went on to sell over 23 million copies worldwide, becoming a defining part of System 3’s history.

There have been significant milestones along the way. System 3 became the first European company to reach number one on the US Billboard games chart and, in June 1986, the first European video game company to receive a CES Showcase Award for technology.
Our history also includes working with leading Japanese studios and console manufacturers, contributing our development and publishing experience to titles such as Silent Bomber, Toshinden 4 and the original Guilty Gear. These collaborations form an important part of System 3’s story, bringing together creative talent from Europe and Japan.

Over the years, we have worked on and published games across every generation of Nintendo and PlayStation hardware, encompassing home consoles and handhelds. Each generation has brought new opportunities to explore ideas, develop our craft and introduce our games to new audiences.

Our Play It label also made its mark on PlayStation 2, bringing original games to players at affordable prices. Launched in 2003, Play It grew to become Sony’s seventh-largest publisher by volume in Europe, establishing value publishing as another important part of System 3’s success.

Ferrari Challenge pushed console racing forward. In 2007, our PlayStation 3 demonstrations showcased the first true racing simulation and the first 16-player online racing demo, double the eight-player limit of Forza Motorsport 2. We also demonstrated weather changing from dry to wet during a race, transforming track conditions and forcing drivers to rethink their braking, acceleration and cornering as the race unfolded. Our innovation has also extended to how games are sold. System 3 conceived and introduced the first console code-in-a-box release with Ferrari The Race Experience on PlayStation 3, supplying a digital download code inside a boxed retail product. We later became the first publisher, alongside Bethesda, to bring code-in-a-box releases to Nintendo Switch, helping establish a format that has since been widely adopted across the industry.

Our work has also extended beyond gaming. We invented and developed the automotive industry’s first car configurator directly for Ferrari, bringing System 3 founder Mark Cale’s vision to life. By applying our experience in interactive graphics, we enabled Ferrari to offer its customers a new way to visualise and personalise their cars, an approach that has since become standard across the automotive industry worldwide.

Behind these achievements are the people who made them possible. Programmers, artists, designers, musicians, producers, publishing partners and many others have contributed their talent and dedication to System 3’s story.

Just as important are the players who have supported us. Hearing memories of mastering International Karate, exploring The Last Ninja, discovering Myth or playing Putty reminds us how long a game can stay with someone. Seeing those experiences shared with a new generation makes this anniversary particularly meaningful.

To our players, Kickstarter backers, colleagues and partners, past and present, thank you for being part of these 44 years. Your enthusiasm for our games and their history continues to mean a great deal to everyone at System 3.

We are proud of that history, and we look forward to adding new chapters, with more games, more ideas and more memories still to come.
